Over in my professional life at my dear alma mater, I am
in charge of throwing the end of year recognition and celebration for the
students who contribute so much of their time and effort to the programs and
volunteer opportunities offered through my department. At the end of April, we
gather to give out awards, serve all the best in college cuisine (chicken
fingers, loaded potato skins, ice cream sundaes), and let them dance like no
one has final exams in three weeks.</div>

The budget for this year's soirée was pretty tight and
was exhausted between food and entertainment. Not being one to surrender
glamour to a fixed budget (c.f. my fabulous wedding) I got crafty with office
supplies and a spool of bakers twine.</div>

My Pinterest-inspired vision saw a scheme of red and
white (our school colors), balloons in varying heights, and pennant flag
banners spanning the impressive 60 foot wide ballroom. Since purchasing good
quality-looking versions of these flags would have cost as much as $250, I
traced three triangles on an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper, photocopied it on
stacks of red and white copy paper, and
went to town with a paper slicer and hole puncher.</div>

The day of the event, my wonderful Graduate Assistants
volunteered to help me all afternoon to deck out the room. Word of advice: in
my apartment the night before, I tried stringing the flags on to one of the
banners. Unfortunately my apartment is not 60 feet wide. Assembling one of
these behemoth banners requires at least 2 people (better with 3 - two people
feeding the flags on to each end and one person pulling the threaded pennants
to the center) and is best completed in a space in which the entire length of
your banner can be stretched out. In smaller spaces, you will wind up with a
sad, tangled nightmare.</div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="line-height: 115%;">Quite a bit has been going on here in the house
of Scouter’s Wife. It’s been nearly a year since I learned this new Order of the Arrow lodge was happening and that my husband, fresh from the Retired Lodge
Adviser’s Club, was to once again be at the helm. I started to begin the
process of bracing myself. I said good-bye to weekends and hello to the
countless voices on the other end of the phone competing for my husband’s attention.
As a seasoned Lodge Adviser's Girlfriend/Fiancée, I knew what I was in for, but
this go around, it would be <a href="http://www.bsa-gnyc.org/document/2012-oa-change" target="_blank">times five</a>. </span><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="line-height: 115%;">We’re not the first to merge, but this </span></span><span style="line-height: 18px;">wouldn't</span><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="line-height: 115%;"> be like any other OA amalgamation.
We’re truly pioneers in newly Chartered territories. </span></span></span></div>

whole process has been from my wife-perspective? Not the scouts - the boys are phenomenal. </span></span><span style="line-height: 18px;">They've</span><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="line-height: 115%;"> been
level-headed, considerate, and thoughtful. The biggest issue has been adults – scouters who can’t get past the past and embrace changes that are
necessary for scouting to continue on for many generations to come. I get that
it’s an emotional time. I understand that we’re talking about a century of
history and memories and tradition. No one expected it to be an easy process
but I know I certainly did not expect to witness so much selfishness and </span></span><span style="line-height: 18px;">stubbornness.</span><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="line-height: 115%;"> The past must be honored and
preserved, but what good does it do when there is no one to pass that history

<span style="font-family: inherit;">"The

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">For over a century, the BSA has helped </span><i>build
the future leaders of this country</i><span style="font-weight: normal;"> by combining educational activities
and lifelong values with fun. The Boy Scouts of America believes — and, through
over a century of experience, knows — that </span><i>helping youth is a key</i><span style="font-weight: normal;"> to building a

<br />
<div style="background-color: white; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<span style="background-color: transparent; font-family: inherit;">As Scouting’s National Honor Society,
our purpose is to: </span></div>
<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">Recognize
those who best </span><i><span style="font-family: inherit;">exemplify the Scout Oath
and Law in their daily lives</span><span style="font-family: inherit;"> </span></i><span style="font-family: inherit;">and through that recognition </span><span style="font-family: inherit;"><i>cause others to conduct themselves in a way
that warrants similar recognitio</i></span><span style="font-family: inherit;"><i>n</i></span><span style="font-family: inherit;">.</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">Promote
camping, responsible outdoor adventure, and environmental stewardship as
essential components of</span><i><span style="font-family: inherit;"> </span><span style="font-family: inherit;">every Scout’s
experience</span></i><span style="font-family: inherit;">, in the unit, year-round, and in summer camp.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit; font-weight: normal;">Develop
leaders with the </span><span style="font-family: inherit;"><i>willingness, character,
spirit and ability</i></span><span style="font-family: inherit; font-weight: normal;"> to advance the activities of their units, our
Brotherhood, Scouting, and ultimately our nation.</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit; font-weight: normal;">Crystallize
the Scout habit of helpfulness into a life purpose of leadership in </span><span style="font-family: inherit;"><i>cheerful service</i></span><span style="font-family: inherit; font-weight: normal;"> to others."</span></li>
</ul>
<br />
<br />
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Sadly, many of these </span><span style="font-family: inherit;">adults have so far proven themselves less than capable and anything but
positive, willing, and cheerful.</span></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">My message to those adults: be
willing to spend yourself serving others or get out of the way of those who
are. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">My </span>prevailing<span style="font-family: inherit;"> hope in all of this has
been the many leaders who have been kind and generous and optimistic and ready
to roll up their sleeves and help my husband and our new lodge officers do
something really special that will influence the youth of our nation for
another hundred years to come. The spark is there. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The
first ever gathering of the brand new lodge <a href="http://www.oa-bsa.org/bulletin/nb-q2-13.pdf" target="_blank">was a day we can all be proud of</a>.
After a late night of setting up, we drove into camp the next morning with
hearts beating just a little faster at the prospect of this untested social
experiment that was about to go down. Every lodge has its own cast of
characters and this was going to be <i>five</i> casts of characters all attempting,
for the first time, to play nice and work together in one room. It happened that Arrowmen
reunited with brothers they haven’t seen in years and the boys crossed borough
lines to play basketball and wall climb and navigate low COPE games. There were
issues that realistically will take years to work out – the lingering “us and
them” attitudes, the complexities of working through a chapter system, accepting
that there are many functions yet one lodge. Yet at the end of the day when
hundreds of Arrowmen joined hands to sing “Firm Bound In Brotherhood,” I could
see it from behind a camera lens:</span></div>

April 1st will mark the beginning of the new Order of the Arrow lodge in our council, for which my husband will serve as Lodge Adviser. I've been the Lodge Adviser's girlfriend and the Lodge Adviser's fiancee but never the Lodge Advisers wife!<br />
<br />
(Yeah, I'm not very good at this anonymity thing.)<br />
<br />
It's all very exciting! "Mrs. Deputy <span class="highlight selected">Supreme</span> Chief of the Fire" Get <i>that</i> on a business card.<br />
<br />
The new lodge will be hosting an event to mark Day One. It's going to be amazing - a true showcase of all that the OA has to offer our Scouts and an opportunity for every Arrowman in the city to come together in brotherhood for the first time. And I'll be on hand to help. <br />
<br />
Naturally, I started planning my outfit. Here's what I threw together:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I had a Kohl's gift card from my birthday and some Kohl's cash. I saw this sweet looking top on a model on their website and though it was too cute to pass up. It's light, airy and comfortable and since it'll be April, the color will be just right for Spring. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/levis-plus-size-jeans-590-fuller-waist-bootcut-oceana-wash?ID=636199&CategoryID=40438" target="_blank">Levi's 590 Bootcut Jeans from Macy's</a><br />

My newest love in Plus Size jeans. I've been wearing Lane Bryant jeans for years but haven't been happy with the cut lately. Where have Levi's been my entire life? Not only do these fit great but the Oceana wash is a great in-between color. Another bonus: the shorter/petite length is perfect on me! Any time your company's pants don't require me to hem - I'm sold. <br />

I remember being a little girl and desperately wanting moccasins. I can't remember where I got the idea - probably one of the <a href="http://www.americangirl.com/index.php" target="_blank">American Girls</a> or a pioneer interest piqued by <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103405/" target="_blank">Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman</a>. (Wasn't that a great show? Note to self: Put complete series DVDs on Christmas List). Anyhoo, I can't believe I haven't owned a pair until now. Super comfy and super stylish. I'm on a mission to bring moccasins back in fashion, people! Also, as I said to my husband, "Order of the Arrow...?....Stylish footwear...?... Hellooo! MOCCASINS! Per-fect! (in sing-song voice)" This is when he just stares at me and blinks. And sometimes walks away shaking his head.<br />

The totem for the new lodge is the Peregrine Falcon. While the hubs concerns himself with how the bird will translate into embroidery on a flap, I started looking for cute Peregrine Falcon accessories (clearly you can see the priorities here). I'm already thinking decorative birdcages with Peregrine Falcon decoys for lodge banquets. (Sometimes my husband needs to remind me that these events are largely attended by men who, for the most part, don't notice these things. I say pshaw! Like the Peregrine Falcon, my creativity needs to sour! Nobody puts Mrs. Deputy <span class="highlight selected">Supreme</span> Chief of the Fire in a corner!) One of the pieces I came upon was this darling antique print in a glass cabochon pendant from Etsy store <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/TartanHearts" target="_blank">TartanHearts Handmade Jewelry</a>. I adore it. It's kind of a nod to our Lodge without being actual insignia. I'm all about nods to things. Here's a closeup of the bauble:<br />

Love those boys (even if most of them are taller than me) and am blessed to know them. <br />

I saw this craft on <a href="http://pinterest.com/" target="_blank">Pinterest</a> and decided to take a crack at
the Roman Catholic version. None of the websites I found had a step-by-step
tutorial, so here you go! It’s a little tedious but the results are great! I’m
going to be using them to promote a bible study group I run.<br />

Just a few tips and hints:<o:p></o:p></div>

Stick with the Hershey’s brand “Nuggets” chocolates. You’re
going to want to use these for this project because the rounded top of the
candies makes them look more like open “pages.” I used the ones with the silver
wrapper which is the milk chocolate. The gold wrapper would look even better
but that’s the variety with almonds, so if you’re nervous about any nut
allergies, stick with the silver since the readable part of the label saying
there are almonds in them will be all covered up.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal">
Use mailing labels instead of gluing paper on to the
chocolates! This was the biggest time saver compared to the other examples I
found on Pinterest and it really looks a lot neater. The 1” x 2 5/8” address
labels work PERFECTLY for this. (Avery 5160 or equivalent - I used Staples
brand.)<o:p></o:p></div>

It's an official BSA uniform GPS! It's pretty cool, and definitely helpful for newbie Scouters Wives. Check it out at <a href="http://bsauniforms.org/">bsauniforms.org</a><br />
<a href="http://bsauniforms.org/"><br /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxIT_TtHgBY_x8SNbQNVWIf7Py-83vkNkmlzxW4xAphn1rUX5eqRMjuHlTH3_DIH2OJTRf3sOSvoEKY5zyogti_Z_5mIeBJ7dGN9L_gUIF5eLqnY5pd1UP43s_vym4SYwI6eGJeBxqYjk/s1600/bsa+uniform+gps.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="571" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxIT_TtHgBY_x8SNbQNVWIf7Py-83vkNkmlzxW4xAphn1rUX5eqRMjuHlTH3_DIH2OJTRf3sOSvoEKY5zyogti_Z_5mIeBJ7dGN9L_gUIF5eLqnY5pd1UP43s_vym4SYwI6eGJeBxqYjk/s640/bsa+uniform+gps.png" width="640" /></a><br /><br />
This got me thinking about the BSA uniform in general. I realize that among today's Scouts, there seems to be a debate over the coolness factor of the uniform. I read articles about some boys getting a hard time from their non-scout friends about it. Now I may not have an answer to that (except that when being bullied about their uniform, boys should respond with something like "How much scholarship money has that Ed Hardy shirt helped get <i>you</i>? Right, I didn't think so.") but I'm beginning to think that it has much more to do with <i>how</i> the uniform is worn rather than the uniform itself.<br />
<br />Allow me a few minutes to brag.<br />
<br />My husband looks good in his uniform. Like, <i>really</i> good. Pressed. Clean. Sharp. Neat.<br />
<br />Ya know, like a <i>uniform</i>. Not like gym clothes. An official uniform.<br />
<a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=7209678863452729498" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><br />Women just love a man in uniform. How is it then that women are not flocking to uniformed Scouters in droves? There's another one I won't have an answer for, but I'll just ask - why is it that men in all military, dress police and firefighter uniforms, tuxedos and most suits can look like they belong on the cover of GQ when many of those same men in basketball shorts wouldn't get a second look?<br />
<br />I propose that it's not so much the magic in the threads as the nuanced treatment of their care and presentation. When your clothes look like they are supposed to, they make you look good. When scout uniforms fit properly and are clean and pressed, they help project what they symbolize - honor and integrity.<br /><br />
So Scouters Wives everywhere, if the hubby doesn't know his loops from his numerals, send him to <a href="http://bsauniforms.org/">bsauniforms.org</a><br />
If his khaki and olive drabs are wrinkled and dirty, send him to a good dry cleaner.<br /><br />
If you're a single woman reading this, send yourself over to me. I know some very handsome single men who look great in uniform ;)<br />

I will never hound my favorite bloggers again for a lack of

<i>Here’s something I wrote on November 1, 2012:</i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br />
I'm sitting here at a PLC meeting four days after Hurricane Sandy hit NYC and my family, my home and I emerged
completely unscathed.<br />
<br />
Thank God for that.<br />
<br />
The news of an impending storm came in with the same fanfare as a 6th grade
sleepover. Most spent the weekend before joking on Facebook about stocking up
on Oreos and board games and the potential of having a couple of bonus days off
from work or school. This was the scenario I'd been hoping for! A rainy day on
the couch with my husband watching movies and munching on grilled cheese
sandwiches and creamy tomato soup? Sign me up! I'd lived through a hurricane
before, anyhow. A year's worth of D batteries , a 5 day freshwater supply,
taped up windows, and a healthy dose of fear had led up to a few downed trees
but nothing more in August 2011. Most who evacuated Zone A later regretted it.
The city claimed millions in damages but nothing I could readily see. Sandy would just be
Irene's annoying little sister.<br />
<br />
The morning after, however, waking up from night of carefree frivolity this past
Tuesday emerged a very different scenario. Our home remained untouched, and
fortunately, we were among those who never lost power, though the blocks and
blocks around us remained dark for 3 full days. We turned on the news to find a
city nearly unrecognizable. The Brooklyn Battery Tunnel was a river, Gerritsen Beach and Rockaway had turned into
Atlantis, and the small tranquil community of Breezy Point looked like a set of
a movie with a plot of the end of days.<br />
<br />
We're still living in the wake of this disaster. I sit here so thankful for
getting through this unharmed and without damage. We're praying for who are
suffering and continue to look for ways to help them. Right now, there's a lot
of chaos. Looks like the troop will be working with our chartered parish to
start up a collection drive for immediate needs. While everyone wants to help,
the biggest need right now is for monetary donations. It's more helpful for us
to open our wallets and stay out of the way of emergency professionals,
although I think everyone wants to roll up their sleeves and get to work. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br />
I know for certain, however, that this, more than ever in New York City, is a time for Scouting.<br />
<br />
Before Sandy
hit, I was reflecting on last year's Hurricane Irene. At the time, my
then-fiancé was on a trip in Europe with his brothers,
a last opportunity for them to go on an adventure before one of them became an
old married man. The impending hurricane was a sensation. People were clearing
battery operated radios and gallons of water off shelves. I remember going into
survival mode. Even if my home remained safe, I could have been facing days
without power or clean water. Unlike much of my city, however, I knew what to
do. Thanks to my scouter soon-to-be husband (and my one year on camp staff) I
already had access to several lanterns, a propane stove, rain gear, all the
Nalgene bottles I could possibly want, water purification systems and proper
clothing layers to stay warm (or stay cool as it was August in New York). I
knew I had everything I could need to not only survive, should it come to that,
but live quite comfortably for extended periods of time if necessary. And more
than gear, I had knowledge – to know where the safest place in the house, to
get to where I needed to be in the event that search and rescue teams needed to
get to me. I knew all of this even without my Boy Scout boyfriend. It dawned on me that most people are not prepared for these kind of
situations.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Every year at summer camp, the conversation always comes up
among the adults about the skill of living without electricity and the comforts
of home for weeks at a time. Sure, summer camp isn’t exactly a survival contest
– after all, we have access to hot showers and ice and running water and portioned
raw ingredients to pick up at the commissary three meals a day at our patrol
cooking camp (not to mention the opportunity to recharge cell phones and check
your email in the Scoutmaster’s Lounge in the camp office when you care to make
the trip). But mostly, it’s you, your tent, and a fire to cook over for two
straight weeks. You learn to work within your environment – you may not be the
most comfortable you can be, but you learn what works and what doesn’t. And
every year, we witness new campers with soggy sleeping bags after a night of
rain because their tent wasn’t staked correctly or eating PB & J breakfast
because they haven’t mastered the temperature control necessary to cook
pancakes on a sheepherder stove. And we get to watch the older boys teach them the
tips and tricks to churn out a meal their mothers would be proud of. Then
before you know it, the first-year campers have become the fifth-year campers and
that same boy who could barely pour milk on his own cereal is the same one
helping the younger scouts set up their KP station. He may not be involved in
scouting for the rest of his life, but you know that someday, should a natural
disaster or some other emergency situation arise, those skills – survival and
leadership – will kick in. He’ll know what to do. He’ll be prepared. </div>

Since my husband and I are in Education, we couldn't go on our honeymoon right after our Fall wedding last year. We eventually did this past summer (more on later!) but the week after the wedding, we spent a long weekend in Mystic, CT on what can be dubbed our "mini-moon." It was fabulous. I'm sure I'll post more about it, bit by bit, (the beautiful Mystic Seaport, Olde Mistick Village, the best french toast on the planet at Mystic Diner, romantic candlelit dinner at Bravo Bravo, fish and chips at The Mystic Boathouse, the charming shops along West Main...I could go on and on.)<br />
<br />
The best souvenir I took from our weekend in Mystic was a bottle of Seaport White from Stonington Vineyards in Stonington, CT.<br />
<br />
Now I'm a wine drinker. Not a very sophisticated wine drinker but that's my drink of choice out on the town. Generally my favorites range from a $6.00 bottle of Beringer White Zinfandel to a $13.00 bottle of Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling (when I'm feeling really extravagant). I like white wine and I like it sweet. I'm not even going to get into "notes of charred raspberry on a willow branch" business because, frankly, I never understand it. I just know what I like.<br />
<br />
You have to know that I'm a planner, and that vacation with me is an organized experience (be still my heart, Danny Tanner and your Clipboard of Fun). I'm not rigid but my husband and I are generally not lay-around type people when it comes to time away. So before our weekend away, I'd planned a list of fun activities to choose from. And so between a morning at Mystic Seaport and a late lunch at Mystic Pizza, we ventured to Stonington for a winery tour and tasting. It was very sophisticated, very honeymoonish, and I got to use my new last name on their mailing list sign up sheet.<br />
<br />
Among the wines we tasted were their award-winning Seaport White. Their website says that it's "a Cayuga/Chardonnay blend that results in a refreshing, balanced, off-dry white wine." Sure. All I know its that it's a sweet-but-not-too-sweet table white and I prefer it served icy cold. I'm terrible at describing wines but since you already know I like White Zinfandel and Riesling, I can tell you it's less sweet that White Zin but lighter than Riesling. If that makes any sense at all to you. Whatever, it's really good. You should buy it!<br />
<br />
It's priced at $10.99 a bottle and available for sale on their <a href="http://www.stoningtonvineyards.com/" target="_blank">website</a>. (They had also mentioned that while most wine shops don't stock it outside of CT, any store can get it for you. After bringing a bottle home, I went right back to their website and ordered a case which saves you a dollar or so a bottle.)<br />
<br />
One wine website describes it: "This award-winning proprietary blend produces a refreshingly balanced
easy-drinking, off-dry wine with a fruity nose. Chardonnay provides a
complex nose, Vidal adds a pungent fruitiness. Simply put – a nice,
sipping wine perfect for an afternoon picnic or an evening
meal/aperitif."<br />
<br />
I drank it on my couch in pink leopard print pajamas and scout socks while watching "The Devil Wears Prada" last night, so it's good for that, too. <span class="st">Cent'anni!</span>PinnieMousehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04573947660329706270noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7209678863452729498.post-82067819716449943002012-09-27T09:45:00.001-04:002012-09-27T09:45:59.348-04:00Be a Scout !This week is Be a Scout Social Media week here in NYC so here's me doing my part!<br />

Thursday was the first day of scouting of the
year for our unit. The most recent former Weblos from the pack of our
charter sponsor became Boy Scouts last night, almost all of them coming
in at the rank of Scout (because of the Arrow of Light award). The PLC
met a couple of weeks ago to put the finishing touch on these first few
meetings. Belt buckles were shined, shirts irons, knots knotted and
loops loopy. We were ready.<br />
<br />
I continue to stand in amazement of the fact that ten years ago, I didn't know what any of that meant.<br />
<br />
Last weekend was the council kickoff of the new year. Because the men of
the troop went down to this event, this left to me the task of signing
up new and prospective scouts at the parish's activities sign up fair.
So there I was, in a troop shirt with the words SERVICE CORPS in 200
point font on my back, telling kids and parents about scouting and
answering their questions and recruiting. (I wore the shirt with the
garish letters, by the way, because a Class A uniform, for me, is out of
the question.That thing on me raises frumpiness to new heights). I am
sometimes surprised by the ease by which I'm able to talk about
scouting. It wasn't me, after all, who grew up in the program. Sure I'm a
lifelong Girl Scout, so I'm sold on the concept of scouting, but
organizationally, the two groups are very different. I surprise myself
at how much I've learned over the years....by asking questions or just
listening attentively to hours and hours of conversation. When I say
things like "I'll have to check with our D.E. about that" or that I've become the
official scouting interpreter for our non-scouting friends (sometimes,
when you've been inside the bubble for so long, you forget that not
everyone is familiar with the concept of National Camping School. You
also forget that not everyone has enough makings for a Scouting themed
room scattered throughout their houses, but I digress.) it's like I can hardly remember when this wasn't a part of my everyday life. <br />
<br />
Last summer, my sister mentioned that one of her colleague's sons was
going to scout camp that summer and wondered if it was the same one that
our troop attends. Without blinking an eye, I responded, "Well they
live in Nassau, right? That means they're in the Theodore Roosevelt
Council, so their summer camp would be Onteora, actually."<br />
<br />
Did that just come out of my mouth?<br />
<br />
I realized some things in that moment. I could no longer claim to be an
outsider. I could no longer just be Scouter's fiancée, at the time. You know, the
sweet girl that helps hang signs or takes tickets at a fundraiser but whose involvement stops there. I was
a part of this program, a scouter in my own right. The role of
"scouter's spouse" is generally thought to be someone who gives outside
support to their husband or wife's scouting career, without being an
active registered member themselves. I've always thought of myself as a
Scouter's girlfriend/fiancée/wife, but it was undeniable. I was on the
troop charter, literally a card-carrying member of the BSA. I've helped
lead the troop on hikes. I've gone camping with the boys. I've assisted
in running fundraisers. Super (like my husband) Scouter I am certainly
not. But I'm in this. So far over my head I'm practicing Safe Swim
Defense over here.<br />
<br />
At the end of the day though, I still consider my primary role in
scouting to be that of Scouter's Wife rather than Committee Member. (By
the way, does it irk anyone else that on the registration form, the code
is "MC" instead of "CM"? Never mind.) I support scouting - with my
time, effort, and money - but at the heart of that, it's my husband and
his love of scouting that I support. It's because of my love for him
that I've learned about the program, that I've tried to give back to it,
that I volunteer my own time. I've always considered myself lucky that
the man I married spends his spare time giving back to the program that
gave him so much; that if he's out "with the boys" late on any given
night, it's usually because of a troop or lodge meeting; that the Scout
Law isn't just something that looked good on a college application, it's
how he lives his life. For that reason I do what I do for Scouting.
It's why I even own my own Class A uniform, why I willingly slept in an A-Frame tent for two months one summer, and why I even consulted various
BSA calendars when choosing our wedding date.<br />
<br />
But they don't have a registration code for that.PinnieMousehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04573947660329706270noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7209678863452729498.post-7058457413765276702012-09-11T22:31:00.000-04:002012-09-11T22:31:45.097-04:00Stuff I Love : Ritter Sport<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbgTPpnNaaaz8Xk2EKy40I_UNzHv_MiGlDJz86AUfCfEmrJhzSaC-jovTdC2NqFhDTbrkwuFgd2w3lYR0whhsjYgFsZqYfvFTwM5SkZzKhmiO46Graa6L4F7LYx1egKBPV2Pr6DsQuQNM/s1600/Ritter+Sport.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbgTPpnNaaaz8Xk2EKy40I_UNzHv_MiGlDJz86AUfCfEmrJhzSaC-jovTdC2NqFhDTbrkwuFgd2w3lYR0whhsjYgFsZqYfvFTwM5SkZzKhmiO46Graa6L4F7LYx1egKBPV2Pr6DsQuQNM/s320/Ritter+Sport.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I swear, half the reason I started this blog is so I can talk about my favorite things.<br />
<br />
But what would that first product be? Oh, I have a list. Nail products, grocery items, chapstick. Whatever I choose for my first product could set the tone of this blog forever. That product would make a statement about who I am and what I value most. There was only one answer.<br />
<br />
Chocolate.<br />
<br />
Not just any chocolate. I heard about this stuff long ago from blogger <a href="http://www.cjanekendrick.com/" target="_blank">C. Jane Kendrick</a>. She mentioned it at some point and I'd wanted to try it, being a lifelong lover of the substance, but I couldn't find it anywhere. And then, one day, out of the blue, months and months later, it was staring up at me, in Walgreens of all places. One bar comes to $4.27 with tax. Pricey, yes. But this is "adult chocolate." Don't get me wrong, a Hershey's does the trick in a Real Chocolate Emergency, but sometimes, you just need an upgrade. And does this hit the spot.<br />
<br />
So far, I've tried the Alpine Milk Chocolate and the Milk Chocolate with Whole Hazelnuts. The 3.5 oz bar is 3.5 x 3.5 inches of creamy deliciousness. Seriously, this is the creamiest milk chocolate I've ever had, and I've had it all - Godiva, Dove, Lindt, Ghiradelli, Perugina, Sees, Russell Stovers, 75% off hollow chocolate bunnies named Peter B. Goode. (This is the part where you insist that I've haven't lived until I've tried Such-and-Such Brand of chocolate and you want to send me a bar. You may proceed.) This stuff is fantastic. If you happen to see it, buy it. You'll thank me.<br />
<br />
A less expensive runner up to the Ritter Sport: Hershey's Symphony bar. (It's gotta be the red wrapper though, not blue. Ritter Sport may be my latest fling but Symphony was my first love. And you just don't forget your first love.)<br />
<br />
I wish you peace, blessings, and copious amounts of chocolate. <br />

I've always been, and I love to write - stories,
letters, citations, anything. I collect books, much to my husband's
chagrin who has had to move them no less than three times now as I've
moved from apartment to apartment. (Did I mention that most of these are
hardcover? tee-hee. Sorry honey.) I'm also a very fast reader. Now with
the Kindle iPad app, I devour entire works faster than Amazon can
charge them to my credit card. (And the hubs is in full support of any
future books I acquire in electronic format. Really, its better for his
back.)<br />
<br />
I've read a few fantastic books recently, which I'm sure I'll get around
to sharing sooner or later. I've just finished renowned blogger Ree
Drummond's book <i>From Black Heels to Tractor Wheels</i>. I've started reading
her blog occasionally, and I say occasionally because when I do, it
sucks me in and 4 hours later, my husband is asking me why I haven't
spoken to him for an entire afternoon. Its not really fair to call "<a href="http://thepioneerwoman.com/" target="_blank">The Pioneer Woman</a>" a blog...its kind of an empire. (It also makes me feel
ashamed and inspired at the same time. This mother of 4 runs a ranch and
still manages to put gourmet beef dishes on the table every night and
author one of the most extensive blogs going. I can manage about two
posts a week and I have no kids and a 2 bedroom apartment in the wilds
of Brooklyn. I hang my head but type on!) I absolutely loved
her book. As someone who had come upon her blog only in the last year,
I'd never known how she met the Marlboro Man and traded Anne Klein jeans
for a John Deere lawn mower. I couldn't put it down and would have
finished it in two days instead of three if it wasn't for that whole
"need to make a living" thing that regularly gets in the way of my
blogging, reading, cooking and cleaning.<br />
<br />
The other famous blogger's book that I've read in the last few months is
Stephanie Nielson's <i>Heaven is Here</i>. Another fixture on my Kindle, I've
probably read it three times now. Stephanie, of the <a href="http://nieniedialogues.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">NieNie Dialogues</a>,
tells the story of the plane crash that she survived with burns on 80%
of her body, but also of her fairy tale courtship with her husband and
the birth of her first 4 children before the accident. I loved reading
her whole story but really liked hearing how she got her start in
blogging. She has great style, she's an awesome mom, she's a woman of
deep faith and has maintained her upbeat outlook on everything about her
life After Crash. What's not to like about that?<br />
<br />
There are a couple of other blogs I read and oh how they feed my wannabe
blogger soul. As I said in my first post, the goal of this blog is to
put out there my life as a Scouter's Wife, and maybe there's someone who
stumbles upon my story who can either relate to my experience or just
wants to be entertained by it.<br />
<br />
I love to read and I love to write. And with women like Ree and Nie
around to inspire me, I hope that just maybe I can write something that
you love to read, too.PinnieMousehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04573947660329706270noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7209678863452729498.post-71165829267263684242012-08-28T10:04:00.000-04:002012-08-28T10:07:05.333-04:00The Language of Scouting<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>

Why did this not exist when I was newbie?</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal">
When you’re new to Scouting, one of the most confusing parts
is all of the terminology – especially the acronyms. I didn’t know my ASPL from
my NYLT. And what on earth is a NOAC and NLATS sounds like a made up disease. (“Yeah
I’ve got this rash on my arm…I think it’s a flare-up of my NLATS.”) Don’t get
me started on “Silver Beaver.” (Sometimes I like to look back in my life and
try to figure out when the phrase “Silver Beaver Dinner” became a part of my
regular vocabulary, but I digress.)</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Now I had to learn like everyone else – fake it ‘til you
make it. (I still remember trying, “So how did you like the 1998 NOAC? That
would be the National Order of the Arrow Conference,” as a pseudo pickup line
on my now husband. There’s something wrong with me.) Well, I’ve just read in
the September-October 2012 <a href="http://scoutingmagazine.org/" target="_blank"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Scouting Magazine</i></a> that there is a section of scouting.org devoted to the “<a href="http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/Media/LOS.aspx" target="_blank">Language of Scouting</a>” including a list <a href="http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/Media/LOS/abbreviations.aspx" target="_blank">Abbreviations and Acronyms Commonly Used in Scouting</a>. This is unacceptable! You new people should have to spend some time
thinking that COPE refers to scouts <i>coping</i> with the fact that they’ll be
climbing a 40 foot rock wall. </div>

Anyhoo, check it out! I wish this had been around when I

<div class="MsoNormal">
Let me just say I’ve been trying to write this blog for
years. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Seriously, I have drafts of my first entry in notebooks. I
have a running list of topic ideas for posts in my cell phone. It’s never
gotten to this spot, however. I’ve gone as far to create a pretty little design
for my blog, and that’s where I stopped. Life takes over and I never have the
time. I even had a blog (and by “had a blog” I mean it existed somewhere in
cyberspace. I think.) before this one so long ago, that I was Scouter’s girlfriend
at the time. I’ve earned my Master’s degree, gotten engaged, married, and
started a new job all in the time that I’ve tried to blog. I guess a lot of the
blogs I regularly read have updates, you know, regularly and I’ve never been
sure I could keep up with that kind of schedule.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Until I realized no one knows about this blog yet so I guess
I really don’t have a schedule. So here I am. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
A little bit about me: I’m a late twentysomething wife of a
very active Scouter. My husband and I have been together for nearly a decade,
during which time he has held local and sectional positions as a youth and
adult. I’m not any kind of expert on Scouting but it’s a program that I love –
98% of the time – meaning I love it when I see how it turns shy young boys into
upstanding outspoken honorable young men, but I love it less when it makes my
husband occasionally be away for 3 weekends in a row. And Thursday nights. And
sometimes Tuesdays. And several weeks in the months of June and July. And every
few years in August. I volunteer as a member of the Troop Committee of our unit
and get to spend time with some of the most incredible young men around and the
most fun adults I know. Though I’ve only been around Boy Scouting for about 9
years now, I am a lifetime Girl Scout and earned the Gold Award, which is the
highest award in Girl Scouting. I work in education and am a proud Roman
Catholic. I expect this blog to be about my adventures in Scouting as Scouter’s
Wife, and probably whatever else is on my mind at the moment. Again, if you
want expert scouting advice, I could point you toward the right people. Here
you’re more likely to find recaps of troop fundraisers and plans I’ve made
while the hubs is hiking in the woods. (Spa weekend, anyone?) Hope you enjoy
reading it! </div>
